Smoked Meatloaf

Many people rate Meatloaf, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy accompanied with a side of Corn as one of the ultimate if not their favorite Comfort Food of all time. Once you’ve smoked a meatloaf in a Wood Pellet BBQ Smoker-Grill you’ll never use your oven again. Hickory smoking a meatloaf adds that WOW flavor profile that your family and guests will rave about.

I recently added the Green Mountain Grill (GMG) Davy Crockett (DC) PortableTailgater Pellet Grill to my stable. My initial intention was to use the DC only on the road but it has turned out perfect for home use when cooking for 2 and/or a small family. I love my MAK 2 Star Wood Pellet BBQ Smoker-Grill and still use it often for larger cooks or certain recipes but the Davy Crockett is beginning to be used more and more.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb Costco 88/12% Ground Beef
  • 2 Eggs
  • Italian Bread Crumbs
  • Small Onion – Diced
  • Tomato Sauce
  • Crushed Garlic, Salt, and Pepper

Mix all ingredients, season to taste, and form into a loaf.

About how long is the total grill time?

Dodgeman … Total time was 3 hours and 30 minutes.
      30 minutes – preheat to 180ºF
1 hour – smoke with Hickory at 180ºF
About 1 hour 45 minutes at 350ºF till internal temperature reaches 160ºF
15 minutes – rest the meatloaf loosely under a foil tent.

These times are for planning purposes only. Remember to always cook to internal temperatures.

The recipe says 1lb of hamburger, is that correct because the picture looks like it is bigger then 1lb would make.

James … yes, the recipe is correct. 1 lb of hamburger. When I took the pictures, I zoomed in so that’s why the meatloaf looks bigger. Also since I don’t use a meatloaf pan the loaf is spread out a little more making it look bigger.

I used a little over two pounds. The one pound did not seem right to me. Two pounds should work fine for you. It turned out great. I add sauteed mushrooms to the one I did. I will be making this again.

Sometimes when I want larger amounts of meatloaf I will mix one pound of hamburger and one pound of Jimmy Dean sausage. But then split it into 2 meatloaves so it’s easier to smoke, bake, and server. Two pounds of hamburger works great too.
